Meet Kim

Kim Thomas

Candidate for Mayor of Richmond Heights

The city of Richmond Heights is poised for a renaissance, and Kim Thomas is the person who can lead that effort.

Kim learned hard work from her mother, who passed away last year in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. After her husband passed away, Kim's mother worked two jobs while raising five children. Her mother's work ethic made her one of the few African Americans to own a gas station in the city of Cleveland. She was a trailblazer who blazed a trail to allow Kim to later follow in her entrepreneurial footsteps.

Her mother's mantra: "Work hard and care for other people, especially those in need." Her life proved that if you take care of people, the universe will take care of you. And her mother's most unforgettable lesson: "In life, there will be many times when you will have to light the torch, and, in some cases, you may have to carry it." Kim believes that true leaders must be willing to do both.

Kim graduated from South High School's cosmetology program and later attended Cuyahoga Community College. She began her career as a stylist and became a national educator and consultant for John Paul Mitchell Systems. Kim traveled globally, helping salons grow their business through marketing and sales training. After establishing her own small business, Kim graduated from Baldwin Wallace University Emerging Entrepreneurs Program, which was founded by the Presidents' Council Business Chamber and is comprised of the most prominent Black-owned businesses in the Greater Cleveland area.

The strength of her family informed Kim's choices throughout her lifetime. And because of her mother's example, it was important for Kim to start her own family. She and her husband, Danny Thomas, chose Richmond Heights as the place to do so and have called the city their home for 26 years. Together, they raised their son, Christopher, and daughter, Amira, in the community and educated them in Richmond Heights local schools. Danny is a retired law enforcement officer who co-founded a non-profit with Kim aimed at helping disadvantaged youth. He has supported Kim in her roles as mother, homeowner, professional, small business owner, and most recently as an elected official. Thomas Family smiles abounded at Kim's swearing-in.

Because Richmond Heights is her home, Kim welcomes the opportunity to take care of its residents. With so many in need due to COVID-19, it will take a well-led collective effort to see Richmond Heights through the pandemic and its aftermath. Kim is the first to admit that she is not a career politician. Instead, she sees herself as a public servant who understands the community's needs and will advocate strongly for moving her beloved community toward a "Brighter Tomorrow."

As an entrepreneur, Kim has always had to keep her eye on the bottom line. And for her, holding public office is no different. As a public servant, Kim's bottom line is simple: You don't have to be an elected official for ten years or more to address concerns, effect change, and find solutions. For her, a community thrives when there is no hidden agenda, and she is simply committed to doing what is right by Richmond Heights.

Kim's Priorities

If elected, Kim has several priorities she will pursue as mayor:

COVID-19 Recovery

Kim has been a leader in efforts to help Richmond Heights residents navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. She serves on the Finance, Audit, Safety, and Planning & Zoning committees, where she helped pass legislation to keep the city financially secure.

Because many communities faced food insecurity, Kim partnered with community stakeholders to host a monthly food pantry and provide residents with food and PPE. To ensure that seniors and adults with disabilities were not left out, Kim also offered home delivery services. With the help of community partners and first responders, they distributed over 189,000 pounds of food to date.

The pandemic also caused many residents to fall behind with their mortgage or rent payments. Kim hosted a community forum on housing assistance with the Community Housing Network, the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County to connect residents to resources and to ensure they received the funding for which they were eligible.

In addition, Kim hosted a health and wellness forum with medical professionals from nearby health systems to educate the Richmond Heights community on overcoming the pandemic's stress through lifestyle changes. As a huge proponent of healthy living, she led the charge to launch the first COVID-19 community vaccination clinic in Richmond Heights to protect members of the community who might otherwise remain vulnerable to the virus.

Unfortunately, many residents became victims of identity theft, unemployment benefits scams, and vaccine disinformation due to the pandemic. To address these concerns, Kim hosted a virtual education forum with a cybersecurity expert to explain the importance of security systems to protect the city and residents from hackers and cybercriminals. As mayor, she will continue the work of safeguarding Richmond Heights from potential cybersecurity attacks.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)

Kim believes the mayor’s office should reflect the caring, diversity, and integrity of its citizens. As Ward -1 Councilwoman, she co-sponsored and passed legislation declaring racism a public health crisis. And as mayor, she will continue that work through an action plan to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within Richmond Heights. The pillars of this plan will include increasing local hiring and support for women-owned, minority-owned, veteran-owned, and small businesses in our community.

Economic Development

Small businesses are the heartbeat of Richmond Heights. They make up two-thirds of the economic growth in our community. As mayor, Kim will partner with business owners by hosting regular roundtable conversations to collaborate on issues, address shared concerns, and connect local businesses to essential resources. Kim served on Cuyahoga County's Census Complete Count Committee as a business co-chair because she knew an accurate count would be essential to bringing new jobs, businesses, and opportunities to the community. Kim has also helped pass legislation to bring millions of dollars into Richmond Heights to support job creation and improve local infrastructure.

Public Safety

The safety of every Richmond Heights resident is a top priority for Kim. As mayor, she will work closely with the firefighters and police officers to help provide the resources needed to protect our community. Kim believes the first responders are a core part of our thriving community. She will hire more full-time firefighters and full-time police officers, upgrading our technology to make safety processes more efficient, and continuing community outreach.

Seniors & Adult Services

Our seniors are the shoulders that we stand on. Kim serves on the Cuyahoga County Advisory Board on Senior and Adults Service, advocating for more funding to provide seniors on a fixed income with additional essential services. As the sister of a person with a physical disability, Kim is compassionate, understanding, and responsive to her sister's unique needs. She has supported and advocated for her all their lives and will do the same for you and your family.

Youth & Young Adults

A mother of two adult children, Kim knows firsthand the challenges today's youth and their families face. She is proud to serve as the Youth Committee Chair on the Workforce Development Board. She also understands the anxiety some young people have about their career pathway, so she became a mentor. As mayor, Kim will continue to advocate for the young people of Richmond Heights by supporting a workforce pipeline that delivers a sufficient and steady supply of local jobs for young adults in our community, particularly disengaged youth.
